Tech Tips
Tech Tip #1:
GM Keyless Entry Keyfob Remote Malfunction
Symptoms:
-
Have to press really hard to activate any
function on the remote
-
Works only a percentage of time OR
-
Keyfob does not work at all
Solution:
There are a few things that could be wrong with the remote, this guide will
outline how to figure out and fix the problem.
- Open up the
remote by taking separating the 2 halves of the remote at the seam
- Remove both the
circuit board and the pad
- Inspect the
contacts on the front of the circuit board. If they are dirty, use rubbing
alcohol and a Q-Tip to remove dirt
- Inspect the
circuit board at the battery holding clip. The battery holding clip should
be connected to the board at 3 points. If one of these connections is
broken, either solder it back on or replace the remote.
- Remove the
battery and check voltage. If the measured voltage is lower than what the
battery is rated at, replace the battery. After replacing battery, press
LOCK and UNLOCK near the car and hold for 7 seconds to reconnect remote.
(Procedure to reconnect remote after battery replacement may vary by car)
- Inspect the
rubber pad. On the back, there are little black pads that make contact with
the circuit board. If it looks like one of these might be shorter than the
rest, replace the entire rubber pad. They can be found on eBay for about $8,
search for the pad by your type of car. (Compare the black pad on the button
that doesn't work to the black pad on the button that does. The one that
doesn't work will be shorter than the one that does)
- If none of
these solve the problem, there may be a failure with a component on the
keyfob circuit board or the receiver in the car.
